The Montana Brands Enforcement Division and its predecessor the Montana Recorder of Marks and Brands both functioned under the Montana Livestock Commission. Records include general correspondence (1919-1974) primarily concerning cattle shipments and brand registration; case files (1927-1973); financial records (1887-1891; 1929-1966); minutes; organizational materials; reports, including an unpublished brand book (1984-1985); and miscellany.

The office of the General Recorder of Marks and Brands was established in 1872 by a legislative act providing that the Clerk of the Supreme Court maintain an office for recording brands for cattle, horses, and sheep. An act approved in 1877 moved the duties to the Territorial Treasurer, who maintained these duties until 1887 when they were transferred to the Board of Stock Commissioners.
